Melt the chocolate in a little of the applesauce. Set aside to cool. Cream the sugar and butter until mixed well. Add the egg, remaining applesauce and chocolate to the butter mixture. Mix the flour and spices and gently fold into the batter. Add the soda and water and mix well. Stir in the dates and nuts. Pour into a large tube or bundt pan that has been prepared with baking spray or greased and floured. Bake at 350 degrees until done, about 50 to 60 minutes. When cool, frost with your favorite cream cheese, caramel or chocolate frosting.
