family honor plates kids

When my children were growing up, I used a large red plate with the words “You Are Special Today” around the rim to honor and ‘reward’ them for showing good character and kindness, so it was totally wonderful to learn that another Charlotte mom was doing the very same thing.

The difference is that she is bringing it to all Mom’s and families who believe in the importance of nurturing good character in their children.  She is also getting families back to the dinner table and helping them reconnect through quality conversation.

Michelle and DaughtersMichelle Weber (pictured above) had one daughter who was a gymnast and Olympic hopeful, while her younger daughter had been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. Searching for a way to level the playing field and raise both her girls to be equally confident, strong and happy, she decided to look beyond the physical and focus on what made each child special and beautiful — their character. And that’s when the idea was born.

Called the Family Honor Plate, it’s been 10 years in the making and Michelle took her own family’s experiences and turned them into a passion. She is confident that the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

Each family — or family member — creates their own unique Family Honor Plate using food-safe paints to express their vision. The plate is painted, baked in the home oven to make the paint permanent, and then is ready to use as a parenting tool!

When someone in the family has done something kind, generous, and selfless, without the expectation of a reward, they get their meal presented on the Family Honor Plate in celebration of their character which was demonstrated by their good choices or even attitude (which is a choice).

Highlighting nine important character traits, the Family Honor Plate creates a family dynamic that helps illustrate role modeling, character building, encouragement, social skills, and self-confidence. The nine character traits are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control, and is loosely based on Galatians 5:22.

Knowing communication skills are the foundation of healthy relationships and success, Michelle also created Table Thyme Discussion Cards, an extensive set of questions that help family members reconnect during dinner time, as they share about everyday, as well unique topics, thoughts or memories that aren’t usually brought up or may not even be thought about at all. Every question prompts you to share the “Why?” behind each answer.  That is where the magic lies.

There is also a fundraising component that could benefit non-profits, schools and communities.  Contact Michelle for more details about how the Family Honor Plate can benefit your fundraising efforts.

No one can explain the Family Honor Plate better than Michelle can, here is her video introduction:
