Holiday season is right around the corner – and you know what that means: gatherings and good food!

When I’m pressed for time and still want to achieve a dish that pleases visiting family and party guests alike, I know that I can run to the store to grab an angel food cake.

These ready-to-eat cakes are so light and delicately-flavored, I believe they make the perfect foundation for a quick, albeit extraordinary, dessert.

Read on for a few of the fun ways I like to jazz up angel food cake purchased from the bakery at my local grocery!

Turn Your Cake into Churros

I’m a big fan of churros, the delicious cinnamon & sugar, fried-dough pastry originating from Spain and Portugal. You can easily turn your angel food cake into this yummy snack by first cutting it into small cubes and frying them in coconut oil over medium-high heat until golden brown all sides; about 2 to 3 minutes. Toss the fried pieces immediately in a bowl of cinnamon-sugar and they’re ready to be enjoyed!

Create an “Angel” Birthday Cake

So it’s not a birthday cake, but you can still take a celebratory approach to your angel cake décor! I first brush the cake with a vanilla-flavored syrup (I like to make my own version of Simply Syrup on the stovetop with 2 tbsp sugar, ¼ cup water and 1 tbsp of vanilla extract) then I completely cover the angel food cake with whipped cream. I finished it off by pressing coconut flakes to the sides of the frosted cake.

A Twist on a Berry Shortcake

We’ve all enjoyed whipped cream and berries on top of angel food cake, but this puts a fun spin on the classic recipe! To give this recipe a revamp, try filling the center of the cake by alternating a layer of fruit, and a layer of whipped cream. Then, frost the top of the cake with more whipped cream and top with more fresh berries.
